Historical Background

 

The God’s Acre Cemetery is a historical burial ground located in the Borough of Watchung, Somerset County, New Jersey.  It is also known as the Watchung’s Historical Burying Ground, the North Plainfield Burying Ground, and the Watchung Lake Cemetery. 

 

It is located on the north side of the Watchung Lake, and was originally part of the Spencer Farm.  It was later owned by Gerald Underhill and the Plainfield Ice and Supply Company.  Today it is owned by the Borough of Watchung.  The cemetery contains the remains of individuals who died as far back as 1797.  It contains the remains of Veterans of both the Civil War and the Revolutionary War.
